Bethel Engine 5 and Stony Hill Engine 3 face off.
Multiple 911 calls summoned Bethel and Stony Hill volunteer firefighters to a house fire on Midway Drive Saturday evening Dec 10 around 630pm. Upon arrival of 2nd Asst Chief Dave Broadhurst the 1 story ranch had fire showing from multiple openings on side A. all occupants were out of the house and accounted for. Bethel Engine 5 arrived and started off with a 2 1/2" hoseline to knock down the bulk of the fire. An interior attack was started but crews were quickly ordered out of the building due to deteriorating conditions. Fire vented from the roof and crews battled the flames for approx 45 minutes before bringing the fire under control.
Crews remained on scene for several hours for overhaul. Two miniature pet turtles were rescued from the blaze by firefighters. Bethel FD operated with Engine 5, Tower One, EMS, and Utility 1 along with Stony Hill Engine 3, Engine 1, and Rescue 2. Dodgingtown FD in neighboring Newtown was called in mutual aid but was diverted to an MVA with injuries in Bethel. Danbury volunteers Engine 5 assisted at the scene then covered downtown Bethel for several hours and Brookfield FD covered Stony Hill station.
The home was destroyed and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
